The opening event to begin the celebration of the University of Maine’s 125th anniversary will take place 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Maine Center for the Arts.

The kick-off for the 125th anniversary celebration will feature greetings from UM officials and entertainment. In addition, David Smith, professor of history, will give a slide presentation on the historical highpoints of the University.

The event is free and open to the public. Other events to commemorate the 125th anniversary will be scheduled throughout the year.

Two distinguished alumni have been chosen as honorary co-chairs for the 125th anniversary committee because of their lifelong loyalty and service to the University: Mildred “Brownie” Schrumpf of Orono, (class of 1925), and Raymond “Bub” Fogler of Exeter, (class of 1915). Schrumpf is a home economist, and recipe columnist for the Bangor Daily News; and Fogler, in whose honor the UM library is named, is a former chief executive officer for W.T. Grant and Co. and former assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy.
