PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Gary Hughes’ goal off an Ethan Raup pass with 16:16 left in the first half gave Brown University a season-opening 1-0 win over the University of Maine’s Black Bears at Stevenson Field on Saturday.
Maine is now 1-2.
Brown had an indirect free kick and the ball was played to Raup, whose pass behind Maine’s defensive wall sent Hughes in alone on goalie Seb D’Appolonia. Hughes chipped the ball over the oncoming D’Appolonia.
Jason DiLullo finished with 4 saves on 8 shots in posting the shutout while D’Appolonia wound up with 8 stops on 17 Brown shots.
“We played well in spurts but not well enough over 90 minutes to come up with a win,” said Maine Coach Jim Dyer.
Unity 2, MMA 0
At Unity, Peter Abello scored both Unity goals to lift the Rams past Maine Maritime Academy of Castine on Saturday.
For the 1-2-1 Rams, Dave Dresser assisted on the second goal. Goalie Rich Dreves made seven saves on 15 shots.
Derek Thurston scored 0-2 Maine Martime’s only goal on a Jim Taylor assist. Matt Frank made six saves on 14 shots.
UMF 4, UMM 1
At Machias on Sunday, Dennis Harmon scored three goals to lift the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers to a season-opening win over UM-Machias.
Peter Grosso and Mike Grey each notched an assist on Harmon’s goals and the third was unassisted. Grosso also set up a goal by Aime Service. Goalie Jeff Woodard made 9 saves on 10 shots.
For 1-2 UMM, Vinnie Licata scored unassisted and netkeeper Mike Bridges made 12 saves on 17 shots.
Thomas 6, St. Joseph’s 0
At Waterville, Todd Smith scored a pair of goals and assisted on the other four to propel Thomas to its fourth win in as many games.
Mike Guarino, Haydn Howman, Flavio Pereira and Mike Ferreira had the other goals for Thomas. Pereira and Shawn Boulet had assists.
Tim Chalmers and Dan Tibbetts combined for six saves for Thomas.
UMPI 2, Husson 2 (OT)
At Presque Isle on Sunday, goals by UMPI’s Chris Cossette and Bob Karcher were offset by Craig Stuber’s goal and Jason Hill’s penalty kick for visiting Husson.
John Hafford assisted on Karcher’s goal and Matt Stelzer picked up an assist on Stuber’s goal.
Darren Allen made 3 saves on 6 shots for 1-3-1 UMPI while Jason Brewer had 7 stops on 20 shots for 2-3-1 Husson.
Husson 1, UM-Fort Kent 0
At Fort Kent on Saturday, Tom Largay’s goal at the 24:57 mark of the first half proved to be all the Braves would need as Husson moved to 2-3 on the season.
Jason Hill and Gary Thompson were each given an assist on the goal. Jason Brewer made 9 saves on 10 shots for Husson.
For UMFK, 2-3-1, Brian Fay made 4 saves on 5 shots.
Middlebury 3, Bates 0
At Middlebury, Vt., Justin Harrison scored a pair of goals off Andy Biggs assists and Brendan Donahue got the game-opening goal as Middlebury triumphed by scoring three times in the first 16 minutes.
