St. John Golden Ball Classic
HUSSON vs. BISHOPS UNIVERSITY
Time, site: Friday, 7 p.m. EST, St. Malachy’s High School Gym, Saint John, New Brunswick
Records: Husson 8-5, Bishops University 0-6
Key Players: Husson – G Raymond Alley (16.2 ppg), G Bobby Campbell (10.3 ppg), F Jeff Shakoor (11.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg), C Brian Burrell (14.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg), F Scott Brown (11.8 ppg), F Rich Mazurek (10 ppg); Bishops – G Tim Johnston (18 ppg), G Bruno Deschene (NA), C Dave Newberry (NA), F David Fisher (10.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg), F Ted Branch (8.3 ppg)
Outlook: Husson will look to get back on winning track after losing four of its last seven. Braves are hurting, however, as Alley has the flu and is questionable. Bishops lost four of its five starters from last year’s runnerup in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association and has struggled accordingly. Braves will look to get ball to 6-8 Burrell on the block and pressure the ball.
UNB-FREDERICTON vs. ST. FRANCIS XAVIER
Time, site: Friday, 9 p.m. EST, St. Malachy’s High School Gym, St. John, New Brunswick
Records: UNB-Fredericton 4-2, St. Francis Xavier 4-4
Key Players: UNB-Fredericton – G Yaw Obeng, G Duff Adams, F Alex Kidney, F Vinod Nair; St. Francis Xavier – G Brian Lee (5 ppg), G Danny MacFarland (9 ppg), F Marion Mathis (15 ppg, 5 rpg), F Blair White (6 ppg), C Todd McKillop
Outlook: St. Francis Xavier is currently the No. 1-ranked team in Canada, its losses coming to international teams. But two top players for SFX, including 6-9 center Richard Bella, will be absent from the tournament in order to compete in an Olympic qualifying tournament for the Central African Republic in Egypt. Still, there should be enough talent remaining for bigger, more physical SFX to handle the smaller, but quick UNB-Fredericton squad.
Tourney format: Consolation is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. EST; Championship is at 8:30 p.m.
