WINTER PARK, Fla. – A double steal executed by Pennsylvania State University in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Nittany Lions a 5-4 baseball victory over the University of Maine here Wednesday.
Andy Simock walked to lead off the 12th and stole second. Simock was sacrificed to third, and Chris Futrick was given an intentional walk.
After a popout to first baseman Shawn Tobin gave the Lions two outs, Penn State worked the steal. Futrick broke for second and Simock sped home.
Maine’s Tim Scott cut off the throw to second and fired home, but Simock beat the throw to give Penn State the win.
For the 6-3 Nittany Lions, Eric Gates doubled, singled twice, and drove in a run. Chris Buzzi also had a double and two singles. Chris Church came on in relief in the sixth and pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings to notch the win.
Catcher Adam Mitchell doubled, singled, and drove in a run for the 6-8 Bears. Shawn Tobin singled twice and had an RBI. Bob Zurinskas (0-2) took the loss in relief.
Maine took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Tobin, scoring Shane Slicer.
The Nittany Lions tied it in their half of the sixth on a Pete Foote RBI triple.
Maine first baseman Gabe Duross injured his shoulder making a defensive play in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Mark Ballard had to leave the game in the seventh with a sore throwing shoulder.
