BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Disturbed by BDN photo

I am outraged that the Bangor Daily News published the grotesque picture of Dr. Irving Paul on April 10. This wonderful man and his wife were already severely traumatized. They did not need your insult added to their injury. This is an egregious example of the press overstepping its bounds. Cathy Bernier Bangor

I agree that an abduction is news, but the picture enrages me. Did you not consider the feelings and dignity of Dr. Paul? Would you want your picture published on the front page if you had been bound and gagged? I most certainly would not. Julie Garrity-Whitten Bangor

The distressing photograph shows Dr. Paul sitting in the trunk of his car, where abductors had left him, bound and gagged. The photograph shows three trooopers (or policemen) attending — one may be removing the leg bonds, one seems to be looking on and one is filling out a paper. Dr. Paul remains gagged!

He must have been in considerable distress, yet no one has removed the gag. His eyes are bugged out and his breathing might have been labored — certainly he was in a stressful situation, and, how in bureaucratic terms, could he have answered any questions or told anyone what his immediate needs might have been — air? water? warmth? A distressing photograph, indeed. Dorothy B. Hayes North Brooklin
