Burglary suspect caught at Holden General Store

A rash of burglaries at the Holden General Store that have occurred during the past six months were solved Wednesday night when a Bangor man was caught inside the store, investigators said Thursday.

In the past six months several thousands of dollars in cash and cigarettes were stolen from the store on Route 1A, said Penobscot County Sheriff Detective Glenn Ross.

Ross said the store has been burglarized at least five times in six months.

On Wednesday night, an alarm that had been installed at the store went off about 11 p.m. Deputy Paul Gaucher was seconds away and arrived to find someone still inside the building.

Gaucher secured the building and waited for backup from the Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police.

Additional officers arrived, including Trooper Cliff Sibley and his police dog. The dog searched the store and found Edward Martin, 27, of Bangor hiding in the rafters in the attic, Ross said.

Martin was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail. He appeared in 3rd District Court in Bangor Thursday morning, charged with burglary and theft. He also was being held on a Hancock County Sheriff’s Department warrant for failing to appear in court.

Bail was set at $550 cash or $2,500 surety bail and Martin remained in jail Thursday night.

Ross said the arrest of Martin closed the investigation, which was a cooperative effort between the Sheriff’s Department and the state police.
