Chai, Gasink of Cony High advance in tennis singles

PORTLAND – Anna Chai and John Gasink, both from Cony High School in Augusta, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal round of the State Singles Tennis Tournament with quarterfinal victories at the Tennis Racket here on Monday.

The quarterfinal round of the tournament was postponed from Saturday when it started to rain at the University of Maine in Orono during the Round of 40 action.

It was rescheduled to be played at Falmouth High School, but more rain moved it inside.

Semifinal and final action will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Deering Oaks in Portland. In case of more inclement weather, the matches will again be moved to the Tennis Racket.

Chai, the two-time defending state singles champ, defeated Corey Harmon of Cape Elizabeth 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semis once again. In other girls quarterfinal action, Sarah Newcomb of Cape Elizabeth defeated Suzanne DeGolian of Gorham 6-0, 6-0 and Erin Wentworth, also of Cape, beat Caitlin Tso of Waynflete 6-1, 6-2.

Els Bos of Bonny Eagle had defeated Anne Bernard of Caribou 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday.

Chai will face Bos in one semifinal with Wentworth facing Newcomb in the other.

In boys action, Gasink defeated Jeff Smith of York 6-1, 6-2, John Weber of St. Dominic bested Nate Merlin of Thornton Academy 6-0, 6-4; Brian Bouchard of Lewiston held off Peter Haase of Waterville 6-1, 7-5; and Tom Gable of Kennebunk swept two sets from Jeff Lathrop of Hall-Dale 6-3, 6-4.

The semifinal round will feature Weber vs. Gasink and Bouchard vs. Gable.

Weber lost a two-set match to Brian Patterson of Falmouth in last year’s final.
