MDI police catch man after search

The driver of a stolen vehicle who led police and rangers on a chase through Acadia National Park on Tuesday was arrested early Thursday morning in Southwest Harbor on charges of theft and burglary.

Stephen Jarvis, 24, of Marblehead, Mass., who refers to himself as “Phoenix,” appeared Thursday afternoon in Hancock County District Court on multiple charges, including theft and burglary, for his alleged involvement in several incidents in the area over the past two days. He was in Hancock County Jail early Thursday evening.

Bar Harbor Police Chief Nate Young said that tips from residents and the coordinated efforts of the three police departments on Mount Desert Island and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department led to the man’s arrest.

Young said Jarvis apparently has no criminal record, but that he was listed as a missing person in December 1992. At the time of his disappearance, Jarvis’ mother reported the theft of her own car and some household items.

The charges against Jarvis include his alleged possession of a vehicle stolen in July from Burlington, Vt., and the alleged theft of a car Tuesday night from Seal Harbor that was wrecked Wednesday morning in Ellsworth.

Jarvis also allegedly burglarized a cabin at the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor on Tuesday night, taking about $300 in cash and several credit cards. One of the cards later was used in Ellsworth to obtain cash.

The Massachusetts man also is charged with entering a rental condominium at the Westside Condominiums in Southwest Harbor on Wednesday night and taking food from the refrigerator while the occupants were in another room.

Police have been looking for Jarvis since he led a Bar Harbor police officer on a chase down the Miller Garden Road on Tuesday morning. About 20 officers and park rangers combed the woods of Gorham Mountain off the Park Loop Road in Acadia for Jarvis, who had parked the stolen vehicle he was driving at the Thunder Hole parking area after driving the wrong direction down the one-way road.

The search continued after Jarvis allegedly was involved in a one-car accident in Ellsworth early Wednesday morning. The truck demolished in the accident had been stolen from Seal Harbor the evening before.

The Bar Harbor police were tipped off Wednesday evening that a man fitting the description of Jarvis had hired a taxi in Ellsworth and had been taken to the ferry terminal in Bass Harbor.

Search efforts were stepped up that evening, after there were other confirmed sightings of a man fitting Jarvis’ description in the area.

At about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, there was a report of a man fitting Jarvis’ description standing near a Manset residence. At 10:30 p.m., a rental condominium in Southwest Harbor was burglarized. When the family dog barked, the burglar bolted.

By then, police were monitoring by roadblock all traffic leaving Mount Desert Island at the Trenton Bridge, in an effort to apprehend Jarvis if he tried to leave the area.

At 6 a.m., Southwest Harbor Police Chief Tom Seabrease spotted Jarvis at the head of the harbor in that town. Two police officers pursued the man on foot and caught him.

Jarvis had changed his appearance somewhat since he first eluded police in Bar Harbor, having purchased a new T-shirt and hiking boots. First reports indicated Jarvis had been carrying a skateboard when he fled on foot into the national park woods.

His skateboard was found on the lawn of the Westside Condominiums after the break-in, Young said. Jarvis also told police that some American Indians out West had given him the name “Phoenix.”
