No smoking at the mall

I would like to congratulate Roy Daigle, general manager of the Bangor Mall, for the decision to declare the location smoke-free.

Roy has shown no small amount of courage by deciding not to wait until the Jan. 1 date mandated by state law, and will no doubt get some flak from some folks who feel he should not have done so. If there is any kind of civic award for thoughtful business persons in this area, I would suggest that Daigle be nominated. Bernie Roscetti Veazie

I have recently heard that the Bangor Mall on Hogan Road is now smoke-free.

On Oct. 13, I went into the mall and between 20 and 30 feet from the mall entrance there is a display sign. In one of the frames there is an advertisement for Camel Wides. There is a picture of two (?) camels enjoying a cigarette. Another few feet away is a rest area. Now, if I were a smoker, I’d go to one of the seats and light up. I saw no signs stating “No Smoking” in the entrance.

What kind of hypocrisy are they preaching? When they finally decided on a no smoking ban, why didn’t they, whoever they are, go about the business of checking the mall for cigarette ads, and at least cover them with papers and cardboard, or get them removed? …

Do it thoroughly or leave it alone. We have too many politicians who have gone to the same school. They only do so much and never seem to finish the job. Halfway through they forget what it is they’re doing. Get with it! You are advertising cigarettes and say, “No smoking.” Which is it to be? Donna Smith Southwest Harbor
