Old Town-Orono rallies by Penquis

ORONO – The Old Town-Orono Twins survived a big scare from Penquis, rallying for seven runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to notch an 8-7 American Legion baseball victory Monday night at the Orono High field.

Undefeated Old Town-Orono trailed 6-0 entering the sixth, but took advantage of four errors that enabled it to bat around in the inning and take the lead.

Jason Clifford provided the game-winning RBI with a sharp single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.

Shane McCannell and Chris Bagley each singled twice for OT-O.

Matt Thomas drilled the first pitch of the seventh inning for a home run to give Penquis a late lead, and also had a single. Deron Smith added a double and a single.

Waldo County 8, Trenton 3

At Belfast, Bobby Hughes pitched a complete-game seven-hitter and drove in three runs with a two-run homer, double and single as first-year team Waldo County picked up an important win in its bid to qualify for the Zone 1 tournament.

Waldo County spotted Trenton a 3-0 lead before Chris Steiner’s two-run single in the third inning and Jack Gallagher’s RBI base hit in the two-run fourth inning gave the hosts the lead for good.

Steiner had two singles and two RBIs for Waldo County. Jerry Gray’s double and single and RBI; Jason Brown’s two-run single and J.T. Loomis’ two base hits led Trenton.

Skowhegan 8, Bangor 2

At the Mansfield Complex in Bangor, Jared Cochran and Nate Jewell combined on a six-hitter, striking out six and walking six between them, as Skowhegan upset Bangor.

Adam Fitzpatrick had a double and a single and scored two runs for the winners; Corey Hight singled twice; Jerry Veilleux had an RBI double and Kregg Jarvais had a two-run single.

Eric Murray doubled and singled for Bangor and Matt Kinney had two base hits and an RBI.

Molunkus 11, Downeast 1

At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Frank Peckham lashed a three-run double to cap a nine-run third inning to pace Molunkus Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League action.

Molunkus went on to win the game which was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Mark O’Clair hit a double and a single for Molunkus, while Troy Martin and Bert Marsden had two singles and an RBI each.

Rick Wickett held the Yankees to two hits and one unearned run in 6 2/3 innings of work.
