Late surge gives Paul Bunyan crown to host Braves

BANGOR – They were outplayed for most of the game.

But the Husson College Braves, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, outscored the University of Maine-Machias 12-3 over the game’s final 4:18 to beat the Clippers 102-100 for the Paul Bunyan Tournament championship at the Newman Gym here Sunday afternoon.

To reach the final, Husson overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to nip St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) 82-79 in overtime on Saturday and UM-Machias outlasted UM-Presque Isle 66-64. UMPI won Sunday’s consolation game over St. Thomas Aquinas 95-71.

Obadiah Johnson’s 27 points; Tony Tobin’s 18 points, 8 assists and 4 steals; Jimmy Watkins’ 12 points and 11 rebounds; tourney Most Valuable Player Bryan Jefferson’s 12 points and eight assists and Rick Sinclair’s 11 points paced 6-1 Husson.

UMM, now 4-3, received a game-high 34 points from freshman guard Josh Fannon; 18 points from Jagos Medenica; 15 points from P.J. Bristol and 11 points each from Barry Shramban and Antoine Morin. Shramban grabbed 11 rebounds.

Watkins, UMM’s Fannon and Medenica; UMPI’s Chris Casavant and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Frank Hurrye were picked to the all-tourney team along with MVP Jefferson.

“Machias did a great job. They played very well,” said Husson Coach Warren Caruso. “But our kids hung tough and they did what they had to to win.”

“We stepped it up at the end and we went to a trapping zone press. That helped us,” said Husson senior guard Xavier Joyner.

“We had our chanceast three to four minutes,” said UMM Coach Sean Casey. “We were too tentative on offense and it cost us. And our players were drained.

“But I’m proud of our kids. They proved they could play at this level,” added Casey.

“We knew we were in better physical condition (and that was a key),” said Jefferson, whose two free throws with 15 seconds left broke a 100-100 tie.

Husson trailed 97-90 with 4:18 left when an open Sinclair took a pass from Jefferson and drained a three-pointer.

UMM’s Corey McPhee and Shramban each hit one-of-two from the free throw line to sandwich a Johnson foul shot and Husson’s Brian Alley followed by knocking home the rebound of a Watkins miss.

UMM’s Morin hit one-of-two to make it 100-96 with 2:10 left but Johnson hit a three-pointer from the right corner with 2:00 left to pull Husson within one.

Morin missed two free throws with 1:33 left and Johnson tied it with a free throw 16 seconds later.

Both teams missed shots and UMM got the ball with 26 seconds left.

Sharpshooting phenom Fannon, who had 27 points in the first half thanks to 8-for-12 shooting from three-point land, stumbled at mid-court, lost the ball and fouled Jefferson, who converted the two free throws for the win.

“It was my fault. It was a freshman mistake. I tripped but I should have passed the ball (earlier). Then I fouled him,” said Fannon, a native of Haines, Alaska.

“I knew I had to stick the free throws. It was like deja vu,” said Jefferson, who had two clinching free throws in overtime against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
