GREENVILLE — A power outage caused by a lightning strike in the Greenville area last Saturday caused a shutdown of Greenville Steam Co. for a week to 10 days.
Scott Hersey, plant manager, said a sequence of events that occurred after the power outage caused the plant to lose oil to its turbine. The lightning did not strike the plant, he said.
Employees are repairing the main bearings on a turbine.
Hersey said the plant normally produces 300 megawatt hours of electricity a day, which is sold to Central Maine Power Co.
“We’ve been working with them to coordinate the shutdown,” he said.
Greenville Steam has a contract to supply CMP with a certain amount of power each year, but CMP will have to find another source to fill in while repairs are being made to the Greenville company.
