STOW, Mass. – Chris Riley led 32 golfers through the first day of match play in the 70th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Riley, 21, of San Diego, Calif., defeated Rob Long, of Clarksville, Tenn., 2-up Wednesday at Stow Acres Country Club.
Casey Bourque of Biddeford lost to Mike Vance of Henderson, Nev., 1-up.
The tournament, composed of amateur golfers who don’t belong to private clubs, cuts the field to eight golfers Thursday with two rounds of match play. The champion will be decided Saturday by a 36-hole final.
