BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

At about 6:45 a.m. Feb. 1, while on my way to work, something caught my eye near the main entrance of Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor. After realizing it was a deer caught between the bars of the fence that surrounds the cemetery, I had my husband pull over and stop.

The deer was covered in ice, and we realized it had come across the Penobscot River the previous night. I got out of our vehicle and ran to a nearby house where I knew a cemetery caretaker lived. I pounded on his door and asked him to please help the deer that was caught in the fence. I returned to our vehicle and saw a man in a truck make a U-turn and stop by the main entrance to the cemetery. My husband, the caretaker and the man all agreed that the bars of the cemetery fence had to be pulled apart in order to free the deer.

My husband had a hacksaw, but knew it would take too long to saw through the bars. The man in the truck had a chain and asked permission from the caretaker to use his truck to spread the bars. As the man parted to get the chain from his truck, the caretaker somehow freed the deer from the bars of the fence. Immediately the deer bounded across Route 2, down the bank toward the river to freedom.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to help this defenseless animal. Patti Goslin Veazie
