Dick Curless Day proclaimed

The Baron of Country Music will get his day this Sunday. Gov. Angus King recently proclaimed Oct. 19 as Dick Curless Day.

Born in Fort Fairfield in 1932, Curless picked up the guitar in his teens and hit the country charts big in 1965 with “A Tombstone Every Mile,” a ballad about truckers driving the Haynesville Woods roadin winter.

Curless had recorded more than 35 albums when he died in 1995 of cancer. Peter Guralnick, author of the acclaimed Elvis Presley biography, “Last Train to Memphis,” and writer of the liner notes for Curless’ last album, “Travelin’ Through,” called him a “major figure” in the recording business, testament to the Maine man’s successful struggle against the Southern bias in country music at the time.
