MADAWASKA — Candidates for the Greater Madawaska area Citizen of the Year award have been named by the Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce.
Twelve individuals, each honored as Citizen of the Month in 1997, are finalists for the award, which will be presented at the Chamber’s annual dinner in March. All 12 will be honored at the Chamber dinner.
The public is invited to help select the award recipient by voting for one candidate on the ballot found in Greater Madawaska area copies of the Valley Times.
The following individuals are candidates for the award:
Joe LaChance of Madawaska has been instrumental in projects such as Christmas in the Park and the Lakeview Motorcycle Party and Poker Run.
Lynn Arnoldy of Madawaska was the driving force behind Christmas in the Park in 1995 and 1996.
Adrian Gagnon of Madawaska is credited with reorganizing the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Social Justice and Peace Commission.
Judy Paradis, state senator, of Frenchville is a strong supporter of the Acadian culture and people of the St. John Valley, locally and at the state level.
Verna Cyr-Fortin of Madawaska was nominated for her efforts with the Madawaska Historical Society and local thrift shop.
Don Cyr of Grand Isle is the founder of Lille’s Centre Culturel du Mont Carmel, and has been active with cultural preservation efforts throughout the Valley.
Tobee and Murielle Deschine of Madawaska were nominated for their generosity to the people of the Greater Madawaska area.
Colleen Thibeault of Madawaska volunteers upward of 35 hours a week assisting the Chamber.
Jesse Michaud of Grand Isle is a leader with the area Explorer Law Enforcement Scouts.
Eugene Lagassie of Madawaska was nominated for his dedication to the St. John Valley Associates Advisory Board.
Rick Cyr of Madawaska was nominated for his work with the Madawaska Snowmobile Club and the International Snowmobilers Festival.
