Enrollment of students from Forks on agenda

BINGHAM — The state agent for the new Forks Plantation school district plans to meet with the SAD 13 board of directors at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Quimby Elementary School to discuss future enrollment of The Forks students in SAD 13.

Dale Doughty, who works as the superintendent in the new district, will submit to directors “a proposal to educate Forks students in SAD 13 next year and perhaps beyond,” said SAD 13 board Chairman Brian Malloy in a telephone interview Thursday.

SAD 13 is required to accept Forks students for one year only, Malloy said. Currently, four students from The Forks pay tuition to attend SAD 13 schools, he added.

A previously scheduled session between directors and Doughty was postponed when he got caught in traffic near Farmington the night of the meeting, Malloy said.

Doughty became superintendent of the new district when The Forks withdrew from SAD 13, with state permission, on July 1, 1998.

In other business before directors on Tuesday, Superintendent Gary Moore will set a date for labor contract negotiations for the hourly employees, or the nonteaching staff. “Their contract expires later this year, and they’ve asked for negotiations for beyond the current date,” Malloy said.

In a related matter, negotiators from the Upper Kennebec Valley Teachers’ Association will meet with the board in executive session to review guidelines regarding salaries and fringe benefits, Malloy said. The teachers, whose labor contract expires at the end of the school year, have requested negotiations for a new contract.

The board will discuss adding to the contract three coaching positions for girls and boys junior varsity basketball and track teams and one adviser to the student council for the 1999-2000 school year.

Technology consultant Kirk Hinote will update the board on computer activities at the schools.

Nutritionist Jean Dionne will give a report on the school lunch program.
