AUGUSTA — Maine State Police said they will put more troopers on the streets to search for drunken drivers and other lawbreakers during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
In addition to drunken drivers, troopers will be on the lookout for speeders and those not obeying Maine’s seat belt and child safety laws, Maine State Police Chief Col. Malcolm Dow said.
In the last five months, 75 people have died on the state’s highways, compared to 66 killed during the first five months of 1998, Dow said.
Maine Department of Transportation officials warned that there likely will be traffic slowdowns because of construction areas on Interstate 95 in Topsham and Brunswick and on the Maine Turnpike in Gray, Portland and Falmouth.
