Berry’s goal leads Orono past Winslow in OT

ORONO – Orono High School senior right wing Ben Berry said he wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.

He had elected to take a slap shot from the middle of the slot with three minutes left in regulation Wednesday night only to have Winslow High School junior goalie Mike Bilodeau get his blocker on it.

Less than a minute later, Winslow’s Brad White sent the game into overtime but Berry decided it with a breakaway wrist shot 5:29 into the OT as Orono triumphed 4-3 in a thriller at Alfond Arena.

“I wasn’t thinking when I took the slap shot. I wasn’t going to do that a second time,” said Berry, who was sent in alone by junior defenseman Travers Kurr.

“I was going to go five-hole but he dropped his [left] leg down. I put it over his leg and it hit the post. I was looking for the rebound when the [goal] light went on,” said Berry. “I couldn’t have had a better pass from Travers.”

Orono’s victory avenged a 3-2 overtime loss on Jan. 22 and improved the Red Riots’ record to 17-3.

Winslow fell to 17-2 and it was the Raiders’ first loss to an Eastern Maine Class B opponent.

“We had our chances,” said Winslow coach Lee Bureau.

Orono manufactured a 3-1 lead on Eric Gordon’s first-period goal, Kurr’s second-period power-play score and Jake Hedstrom’s goal 19 seconds into the third period.

But the dynamic Raider senior line of Ben Fraser between Ryan Siviski and White answered.

Siviski’s shorthanded goal with 3:10 left in the second period made it 2-1; Fraser scored 10 seconds after Hedstrom and White made it 3-3 with 2:09 remaining in regulation.

White’s goal came shortly after Bilodeau had made two exceptional saves including the one on Berry.

“This was one of the best games we’ve played this year,” said Riot goalie Stuart Cady, who finished with 21 saves.

Gordon opened the scoring with an opportunistic goal as he barely beat a hesitant Bilodeau to a loose puck and pushed it past him.

Kurr scored after Bilodeau had made a couple of dandy saves off Pat Skall before Skall threw a cross-ice pass to him for a one-timer from the right circle.

Orono generated good chances on another power play only to have Siviski capitalize on a two-on-one with White. White appeared as though he was going to take a tough-angled shot but, instead, he slid it to the left circle where Siviski one-timed it past the diving Cady.

Hedstrom, who figured in all four goals with three assists to go with his goal, extended the lead to 3-1 by slicing across the top of the crease and backhanding the puck past Bilodeau.

But, on the ensuing faceoff, Fraser slipped a 16-footer bet

But, on the ensuing faceoff, Fraser slipped a 16-footer between Cady’s pads off a two-on-one.

White got the equalizer by getting position on a Riot defenseman, pulling it around Cady and batting it in.
