10 indicted on prescription drug-related counts

MACHIAS — The Washington County grand jury indicted 10 people Thursday on charges involving prescription narcotics, including a couple accused of stealing a cancer patient’s pain pills while he was attending a community-sponsored benefit supper.

Matthew Day, 18, of Alexander and Rebecca L. Leidy, 20, of Princeton were charged with burglary and stealing drugs.

Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh said Day and Leidy allegedly broke into the Princeton home of Carmen Comeau on March 4 while Comeau and his wife were attending a fund-raiser to help with expenses related to Comeau’s illness.

Day and Leidy allegedly stole Comeau’s prescription for OxyContin and Oxycodone, Cavanaugh said.

The grand jury charged three people in connection with an April 18 attack on a Whiting man.

Mark Look, 25, of Whiting, John Gray, 21, of Cutler and Cassie Cates, 18, of Cutler were charged with three counts each of armed robbery and one count each of aggravated assault.

Cavanaugh said the three allegedly went to Jon Davis’ door and asked him to help them change a tire. When Davis came out to assist, the three allegedly hit him with lead pipes, saying, “Get him” or “Get his money.”

Davis was able to escape to a neighbor’s home, and the three did not get his money. Sheriff Joseph Tibbetts said earlier this month that all three acknowledged they were looking for money to buy drugs and thought that Davis had cash.

The grand jury indicted two people from Machiasport — 33-year-old Troy N. Wood and 27-year-old Patricia J. Lyons — on two counts of theft and one count of forgery.

Cavanaugh said Wood and Lyons allegedly stole a safe, checks, savings bonds and assorted documents from Wood’s parents Feb. 2. The couple allegedly forged more than $2,000 worth of checks over the next seven weeks in what Cavanaugh believes was an attempt to support a drug habit.

The grand jury charged 23-year-old Jamie M. Campbell of Machiasport with acquiring drugs by deception and violation of condition of release in connection with a Feb. 18 incident in which Campbell allegedly filled a stolen prescription for hydrocodone.

In a separate case, Campbell and Alan Beam, 37, of Machiasport were indicted for burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violation of condition of release.

Campbell and Beam allegedly broke into an East Machias home March 20 and stole a moped, computer, air conditioner and a television, Cavanaugh said. Both Campbell and Beam previously had been arrested for theft and were out on bail at the time of the incident.

The grand jury indicted three people for trafficking and possessing the painkiller Dilaudid.

Norman Johnson, 47, of Whiting, Amanda McLaughlin, 19, of Princeton and Darren Brown, 33, of Calais all allegedly sold the prescription narcotic to a “cooperating individual,” according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Erickson.

Cooperating individuals are people who have been arrested on felony drug charges who agree to make undercover drug purchases in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence.

In other indictments, 26-year-old Anthony J. Hatt of Baring was charged with gross sexual assault in connection with a March 4 attack on a 14-year-old girl in Calais.

Cavanaugh said the girl went with her adult sister to a friend’s home. Hatt sexually assaulted the teen-ager after the other adults left the house, Cavanaugh said.

A couple from St. Stephen, New Brunswick — Richard Libby, 28, and Lisa Libby, 27 — were charged with the 1998 theft of approximately $87,000 from the Calais Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Both Richard and Lisa Libby were indicted on felony theft charges in connection with an automatic teller machine scam they allegedly used from May 5, 1998, through Oct. 22, 1998. The couple allegedly used their bank cards to make a down payment on a home, purchase a car and buy a diamond ring and other jewelry.

In what Cavanaugh said was an unrelated case, Shauna Deraps, 23, of Calais was charged with theft in connection with stealing approximately $16,920 from Calais Federal Savings between March 1, 1998 and Oct. 31, 1998.

Cavanaugh said Deraps used the same deficiency in the bank’s automatic teller system to allegedly steal the cash.

The grand jury charged Peter A. Magoon, 31, of Calais with aggravated assault in connection with an August 1999 attack on his 4-month-old son.

Cavanaugh said the baby’s skull was fractured when Magoon allegedly slammed his head onto the floor. The child, who was rushed to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, survived, the prosecutor said.

A 35-year-old Eastport man — Rodney Perkins Sr. — was charged with aggravated furnishing of marijuana. Cavanaugh said Perkins allegedly gave his 13-year-old son — who does not live with him — and his son’s friend a bag of marijuana Jan. 1.

Jacob M. Lovejoy, 18, was charged with terrorizing, disorderly conduct, driving to endanger, failure to stop, operating under the influence of intoxicants, eluding an officer and violation of condition of release.

Lovejoy allegedly threatened two women April 26, shouting an obscenity and threatening to kill them. Cavanaugh said Maine State Police Trooper Barry Curtis responded to the complaint. Lovejoy took off from the scene, leading Curtis on a chase. Lovejoy was out on bail on a charge of operating while under the influence at the time of the incident.

The grand jury charged Michelle C. Newman, 23, of Machias with burglary, theft and failure to appear. Newman allegedly broke into a Robbinston home Nov. 12, 1999, and stole two wedding rings and an engagement ring.

She then failed to make her initial appearance in Calais District Court on Jan. 4.

David F. Dean Jr., 22, of Baileyville was indicted on a charge of theft.

Cavanaugh said Dean allegedly stole a woman’s purse in a Calais bar.

Randy L. Fullerton, 24, of York Beach was charged with theft in connection with an incident at a Calais gasoline station Dec. 12, 1999. Fullerton allegedly asked the teen-age attendant to check his flat tire, then stole money from the cash register, Cavanaugh said.

Thomas J. Higgins, 33, of Columbia Falls and Richard E. Hatt, 43, of Princeton were indicted on charges of operating after habitual offender revocation.
