Group of youths assaults Bangor man

A Bangor man reported that he was knocked down and assaulted and his roommate’s purse taken as they walked home early Friday morning.

The man told police that he and his roommate had been at Pat’s Tavern on State Street until 12:30 a.m. and went to the 7-Eleven afterward before heading home. It was while walking home that he noticed a large group of youths — maybe 10 of them, he told Officer Chad Foley — following him on French Street. Before he knew it, he was knocked to the ground and was being kicked in the ribs and head.

He managed to get up and prepared to fight the attackers, but they fled down French Street toward Cumberland Street, he told Foley. Later it was learned that his roommate’s purse had been taken.

The woman estimated that five people had been in the group and after her roommate was knocked down, she said she heard one of the attackers say, “You did this to my grandmother.”

Foley reported that the man had small cuts on his elbows but no other visible injuries. The purse contained identity cards and about $3 in cash. —-

The windows behind Christ Convenant Church at 57 Court St. in Bangor were shattered with rocks and metal rods, according to Joshua Ben Canaan, pastor of the church.

Canaan reported to the police that the incident occurred between June 16 and 22. Police reports estimate it will cost $200 to replace 12 panes of glass. —-

A man woke up to the sound of a thud outside his Old Town trailer home recently. Turns out it was only a man fleeing from police.

The resident of the Nickerson’s Trailer Park told police that after he heard the noise, he looked out and saw a man — later identified as Jeffery Meynard Johnson, 41, of Old Town — running around his trailer. A police cruiser pulled up and an officer got out.

It was Officer Michael Holmes, who yelled for Johnson to stop several times before chasing and apprehending him in the nearby woods.

Johnson was fleeing from another officer, who had stopped his car on Stillwater Avenue, suspecting that Johnson was driving with a suspended license.

Officer Stephen Boyd reported that Johnson was upset about being pulled over and felt he was being harassed.

Johnson reacted with disbelief and a lot of yelling when Boyd informed him that his license suspension had been confirmed, according to the police report. When Boyd went to arrest Johnson, he fled. With both Johnson’s car and Boyd’s cruiser still running, Boyd decided to stay with the vehicles and leave the pursuit to other police officers.

Earlier, a University of Maine police officer had spotted Johnson driving in Old Town, and, confirming that he was suspended, notified Old Town police. Johnson was located at the Dunkin’ Donuts and his car stopped shortly after leaving the doughnut shop’s parking lot.
