Anti-gay bias

The pastor of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church is clearly anti-gay (letters, April 16). We wonder if anyone has ever told him that his church’s play area was built as an Eagle project by a Boy Scout who later came to the realization that he is gay?

That scout, along with his parents and three siblings, faithfully attended Pilgrim Church and Sunday School during his pre-teen and early teen years. We believe that the church helped those siblings learn about love and commitment. That former scout and his partner had a lifetime commitment ceremony last summer, conducted by an ordained member of the clergy.

We must admit that we once thought sexual orientation might be entirely a matter of choice. We’ve changed our minds. Our four offspring were raised similarly; one is gay, the other three are not. We now believe that God creates humans with diverse sexual orientations, then observes whether we love all of our neighbors.

The pastor attributes the high suicide rate among gays to “the presence of guilt.” We submit that attitudes such as his contribute hugely to those undeserved guilt feelings.
