Souviney, Millard star in Junior Olympic events

ORONO – Winslow High’s Katie Souviney won two events and took third place in another, just one of several fine performances from Maine student-athletes at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics Region I Championships at the Beckett Family Track and Field Complex at the University of Maine over the weekend.

Souviney, who will be a senior at Winslow this fall, won the seven-event heptathlon and the 100-meter high hurdles and placed third in the javelin, all in the young women’s division (ages 17-18).

The top three finishers in each event advanced to the national championship in Sacramento, Calif., July 24-29.

Orono’s Maria Millard also had a fine effort in the young women age group. She won the 400 low hurdles, finished second in the high jump and was third in the 400 dash.

Lauren Tebbetts of Waterville and Erin Lynn of Orono were first and second, respectively, in the pole vault. Mainers also went 1-2 in the racewalk, with Narraguagus of Harrington’s Anne Favolise winning the 5,000-meter event and Hillary Easter of Jay finishing second.

Darcy Goyette of Poland was second in the shot put and third in the discus. Gardiner’s Nicole Sergent was second to Souviney in the javelin.

Ellsworth High will be represented in the young men’s division by Ben Shorey, who won the race walk, Eric Rudolph, who was first in the steeplechase, and Adam Macbeth, who took third in the 400 hurdles.

Waterville’s Troy Irvine won the decathlon.
