Pittsfield to make difference at park

PITTSFIELD – Pittsfield residents have a chance to make a real difference in their community next weekend, Town Manager Kathryn Ruth said Monday.

“Make a Difference Day” is celebrated nationwide on Oct. 23, and in Pittsfield, the celebration will be a makeover of Hathorn Park.

Anyone driving by already has noticed the wooden kiosk recently installed by town employees. It will become a central information point for the community and visitors. Soon there will be new park benches, tables, walkway improvements and handicapped-accessibility changes.

“We are looking for as many people as possible to help out with our cleanup and enhancements for Hathorn Park,” Ruth said. “Volunteers are needed to plant, clean up, and just give advice.

“The town is purchasing some of the trees with the grant funding. If people have some favorite types of flowers, shrubs or trees that they would like to donate, we would appreciate it.

“If people just bring themselves, that would be great too, along with some gardening tools or rakes,” the town manager said.

Work will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until completed.

Ruth stressed that when the town received a $9,076 Community Gateway Grant from the Maine Department of Transportation, it was expected to match that with $5,842 worth of volunteer time and donations.

“Working with Maine Central Institute students, the Pittsfield Garden Club, and community volunteers, we have created a list of needed donations,” Ruth said. They include 16 trees, various flowering shrubs and bushes.

Anyone with questions may call recycling committee Chairman Tim Nichols at 487-5959, committee member Jane Woodruff at 487-3343, Garden Club President Betsy Doane at 487-2293 or Ruth at 487-3136.
