Stonington town manager resigns from post

STONINGTON – Town Manager Richard Avery has resigned and will leave his post at the end of the year.

Avery submitted his resignation to selectmen last week. Although selectmen were surprised at the timing of his notice, Avery said he had previously discussed the possibility of his departure with selectmen.

“They were not surprised that I was thinking about calling it a day,” Avery said Tuesday. “We had talked about it before.”

Avery will remain on the job until Dec. 31. It was time to do something different, he said.

“I’ll have been town manager here for seven years by the end of the year,” he said. “A lot of the projects I’ve been working on will be at a stopping point and it will be a good time for someone else to come on. And there are several things I want to do.”

Avery said his first efforts will go toward working on his 200-year-old home in Blue Hill. He also said that he has some business projects he is looking into.

Avery had worked in wind power before being hired as the town manager in March 2000. He also had worked as a computer mapper on oceanographic research vessels and had a law practice in Philadelphia and Yarmouth.

The selectmen have not begun the process of seeking a new town manager. Avery said those efforts likely will begin within the next few weeks.
