Bangor planners to take up radio station request

BANGOR – Four towers and infrastructure related to a new AM radio station proposed for outer Broadway will be the subject of a public hearing during a planning board meeting at 7 tonight at City Hall.

Charles A. Hecht and Alfredo Alonso of Pittstown, N.J., are seeking conditional use and site plan approval to construct four 276-foot-tall radio antennas, four 8-by-8-foot sheds and a 20-by-25-foot service building, according to a background memo prepared by Planning Officer David Gould.

A gravel driveway and a two-space parking area also are proposed for the 51.6-acre parcel, located at 2110 Broadway, about six-tenths of a mile from the intersection of Broadway and Pushaw Road.

The station will be located at 750 on the AM dial.

Information about the radio station’s format was not immediately available Monday.

The applicants could not be reached by telephone. Gould said the station’s format was not among the review criteria within the planning board’s purview. Criteria that do apply to the project include setbacks, drainage and stormwater management, tower height and traffic impacts, to name a few.

Other items on the planning board’s meeting agenda include:

. A preliminary subdivision plan for a 23.15-acre expansion of Judson Heights subdivision.

. Amendment of setback standards for recreational trails in shoreland areas.

. A Maine Army National Guard request to build a 2,800-square-foot addition to a field maintenance plant and to build a new 100-square-foot guard house at Hayes Street and Florida Avenue.

. Site plan approval for Bangor Savings Bank parking lot improvements at 871 Hammond St.
