It’s Curtins for Searsport GSA sisters score four times as Eagles cruise to win

SEARSPORT – The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team ended its regular season Tuesday with a big win over Searsport and an even bigger piece of school history.

The Eagles of Blue Hill, who have been in four Class C state title games since 2000, rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Vikings, wrapping up their first-ever undefeated regular season.

GSA, now 13-0-1, will wait to find out if the team can hold on to the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Maine Class C rankings, which is where it stood in the Heal point standings released Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are pleased to have reached a milestone for the program.

“It’s pretty cool,” said senior captain Laura Overton, who had two goals in the first half. “I don’t think we’ve ever been in first place, either.”

Sophomore midfielder Quinn Curtin had a hand in five of George Stevens’ goals, scoring three of them.

Searsport, now 9-4, was riding a nine-game winning streak Tuesday. But the Eagles handled the Vikings with relative ease, keeping Searsport from taking any shots in the second half. GSA won the teams’ first matchup 4-1.

“They were the better team today and they may be the better team every day,” Vikings coach Mike Garcelon said. “They were so good at going to the ball, aggressive, making things happen. We were just following them around all day long.”

Searsport did score two goals as halftime neared to cut the Eagles’ first-half lead to 4-2, but two quick GSA goals early in the second put the game out of reach.

Both of those early second-half goals started with Curtin corner kicks. She used her left foot to boot a kick to her sister, junior Doran Curtin, who scored the first of the two goals more than two minutes into the second half, then curved one into the net herself about 10 minutes later.

“I’ve been playing soccer for 10 years, so it’s just from practice,” Curtin said of her ability to curve in corner kicks.

Quinn Curtin scored another off her own corner kick with almost eight minutes remaining.

“She’s the most consistent person we have in putting the ball on frame,” said 12-year GSA coach Steve Bemiss. “We work hard at it.”

In the first half, a Curtin corner kick started the play that resulted in Alida Peake scoring the Eagles’ first goal 1 minute, 28 seconds into the game.

Twenty-five seconds later, GSA had a 2-0 lead thanks to Overton’s first goal off a crossing pass from Lydia Clapp. Quinn Curtin then scored her first goal of the game and Overton followed off an assist from Madeleine Park.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been able to score that quickly,” Overton said.

Kayla Garcelon and Tianna Faunce had the goals for Searsport.

GSA goalie Kayla Eaton made two saves on four shots, all in the first half. Megan Higgins and Amanda Chaney of Searsport combined for 11 saves on 29 shots.
