KINGFIELD — Investigators have ruled out arson as the cause of a fire that destroyed one of several wood-turning facilities at the Kingfield Wood Products mill, authorities said Saturday.

Kingfield Fire Chief Roland Atwood said that based on fire patterns and the fire’s point of origin, authorities had ruled out the possibility of arson.

“We’ve ruled out arson, but I’m reluctant to speculate” on the cause of the fire that began Thursday night and resulted in more than $1 million in damage, Atwood said.

No injuries were reported, although as many as 100 firefighters from Kingfield and neighboring areas worked throughout the night to extinguish the fire, Atwood said.

Atwood said the company’s sawmill and “old” mill, which was recently all-but-vacated, were destroyed. The new mill and a storage building that contained highly flammable products were saved.

The fast-moving fire destroyed the 19,000-square-foot old mill, most of whose operations had been moved to the new structure two months ago.
