EAST MILLINOCKET — The Opal Myrick Elementary School’s Culture Club, one of two teams at the school participating in the Fleet Youth Leaders Program, is hard at work planning a cultural event for the community.

The sixth-graders on the team are working on a local talent show that will feature Tim Sample, a well-known Maine humorist. The event scheduled for May 4 will give local people with talent a chance to be part of a “big name” event.

Tom Jarvis, the school principal, David Nicholson, and Frank Clukey are the club’s advisers. They said students were making all of the plans for the show, which would provide them with a valuable learning experience. Students hope to raise $2,500 from the event.

As a second part of the project, students will use proceeds to have an exchange with students from another part of the state. The exchange would provide these other students an opportunity to camp at Baxter State Park for a night and then climb Mount Katahdin, an opportunity that they otherwise might never have. Also, the exchange would promote the local area.

If funds are available, students in the club would take a trip to southern Maine or Boston to visit museums or historical sites.
