Maine Sweeps Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU – Bob Higgins and Chuck Nadeau teamed up on a six-hitter and freshman Shawn Tobin had a run-scoring double as the University of Maine’s Black Bears upended Hawaii Pacific College 7-5 to sweep their Thursday doubleheader here.

Maine rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to win the opener 5-3.

Maine is now 4-5 entering a 3 p.m. (EST) makeup game vs. 4-8 Hawaii Pacific on Friday and a midnight game against the University of Hawaii Rainbows.

In the nightcap, Maine took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on two errors, a double steal, a wild pitch, Paul Kelliher’s single, run-scoring singles by Brian Seguin and Andy Hartung, a balk, and a double steal.

The Bears added two more in the fourth on Gary Taylor’s single, Kelliher’s sacrifice, Tobin’s double, Chad White’s infield single, and an error.

Hawaii Pacific struck back with two in the bottom of the fourth and pulled within 6-5 on Andre Goulart’s three-run homer in the sixth inning. But the Bears got an insurance run in the seventh on Shanan Knox’s walk, a stolen base, and two errors.

Nadeau pitched a scoreless seventh to notch the save.

Taylor and Goulart had two hits each.

In the opener, Maine’s decisive seventh-inning rallied on Tim Scott’s solo homer, two errors, three walks, and Hartung’s two-run single.

Mike D’Andrea fired a five-hitter to pick up the win. Hartung and Scott had two hits apiece.

Sean Okamoto had two hits for Hawaii Pacific.
