Hawaii defeats Maine twice

HONOLULU – Randy Vollmer singled home Todd Takayoshi with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Hawaii edged Maine, 8-7, in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night.

Takayoshi opened the inning with a walk, took second on Tyler Cheff’s sacrifice bunt and stole third prior to Vollmer’s hit.

The victory was the ninth consecutive win for Hawaii, 10-7. The Maine Black Bears dropped to 5-7.

Hawaii had taken a 5-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning only to have the Black Bears rally for five runs and a 7-5 lead.

Five consecutive hits by Maine, two sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly by Chad White accounted for the runs. A two-run double by Craig Ender pulled Maine into a 5-5 tie. Mike DeLucia’s single brought in the go-ahead run.

The Rainbows came back with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 7-7.

Derron Moreland’s single scored Vollmer with the first run and Bill Blanchette crossed the plate when Chard Uyehara drew a bases-loaded walk.

Mark Sweeney and Andy Hartung had four hits apiece to lead the Black Bears’ 19-hit attack.

Vollmer and Moreland each had three hits for Hawaii.

Brady Perriera, 1-2, earned the win while Rob Higgins, 1-1, took the loss.

In Friday night’s action, Hawaii defeated Maine 10-8, thanks to a 7-run rally by the Rainbows in the last of the eighth.

Takayoshi doubled home Vollmer with the tie-breaking run.

The visiting Black Bears took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Andy Hartung and Chad White. In the sixth, Maine made the score, 7-2 when two runs scored on a error by UH right fielder Dwayne Daughtry and another came home on a single by Shanan Knox.

An RBI double by Knox in the top of the eighth gave Maine an 8-3 advantage.

Two walks and three consecutive pinch hit singles pulled Hawaii to within one in the bottom of the eighth. A throwing error by White, Maine’s left fielder, on Vollmer’s single allowed Harold Cabbab to score, making the score 8-8.
