One of the four men charged in the Monday night burglary of Dunbar’s Store on Route 1 remained in the Hancock County Jail on Friday afternoon.

On Tuesday, Hancock County sheriff’s deputies arrested an Ellsworth man, James F. Grindel, 24, and three Hancock men, James W. Gilbert, 22, William H. Gatcomb, 19, and Kevin P. Murphy, 32.

Gilbert remained in jail Friday while the other three men have been released on bail. Bail for all four men was set at $5,000 with one surety or 50-percent cash. The four were arraigned on the burglary charges Thursday in 5th District Court in Ellsworth.

The burglary was foiled when store owner Phil Dunbar and a friend pulled into the store parking lot around 11 p.m. and discovered a man exiting through a window and a maroon and white car heading toward Gouldsboro, Hancock County sheriff’s deputies reported.

Dunbar followed the car and got a license-plate number while his companion stayed at the store to call the Sheriff’s Department. Another man jumped out the window a few minutes later, deputies said.

Three deputies and a state trooper with a tracking dog searched the area for more than three hours and found Grindel allegedly hiding in the woods. Gilbert, who had been questioned and released by deputies after the burglary when they saw him hitchhiking on Route 1, was arrested later in the morning.

Deputies arrested Gatcomb on Tuesday night at his home and Murphy turned himself in. The two allegedly were in the car that drove off when Dunbar arrived at the closed store, deputies reported.
