G. Caroline Morris, former teachers association chief

ASHLAND — G. Caroline Morris, 75, a former English teacher and guidance director at the Ashland Community High School and president of the Maine Teachers Association in 1960-61, died Wednesday at a Florida hospital.

Mrs. Morris, a resident of Masardis, taught school for 43 years in Ashland and Masardis, said Milton Wright, deputy executive director of the Maine Teachers Association. She was chosen Maine Teacher of the Year in 1962.

Wright said the MTA established a G. Caroline Morris political action award in 1974. She was the recipient of numerous awards recognizing her efforts on behalf of education on the local, state and national levels.

Mrs. Morris also coached the girls high school basketball team in Ashland, according to Laura Pike, the SAD 32 art instructor.

She was a former town clerk of Portage. position was a part-time presidency and “she unstintingly would attend the meetings in Augusta prior to the construction of the northern end of the interstate (95).”

“She was a very warm, caring person who did what she said she would do,” Wright said.

Born in 1914, she graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in 1931.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Union Congregation Church in Ashland with the Rev. Thomas Caton officiating.
