Cuban pianist to appear in recital > At age 11, Guttierrez performed with Havana Symphony

Horacio Gutierrez, an internationally renowned piano recitalist, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono. Gutierrez has worked with many of the world’s finest orchestras and conductors and is a frequent soloist at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival.

Born in Cuba, Gutierrez was 11 years old when he performed with the Havana Symphony. He went on to study music at the Juilliard School and became an American citizen in 1967. He first received international attention in 1970 when he won the Silver Medal in the fourth annual Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.

Gutierrez has made several recordings including pieces by Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Liszt. He has performed on television in Great Britain, France and the United States, including three appearances on the “Tonight Show.”

The program for the Maine concert includes Mendelssohn’s “Variations Serieuses in D Minor, Op. 54,” Schumann’s “Davidsbundlertanze, Op. 6,” and Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 29 in B Flat Major, Op. 106.” David G. Klocko, University of Maine professor of music, will give a preconcert lecture at 2 p.m. in the center’s Bodwell Dining Area.
