BUCKPORT — Kristen Finkbeiner, a junior at Bucksport High School, has been selected the Governor’s Scholar from the state of Maine by the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Finkbeiner is one of 50 students in the United States to receive this award. The Interlochen National Music Camp is located in Interlochen, Mich., and runs for two months during the summer. This prestigious music camp ranks just behind the renowned Tanglewood Festival. To enter Interlochen, each applicant must pass a highly competitive audition and many are turned away.

The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition as well as other expenses, totaling approximately $3,200. Finkbeiner began playing the clarinet in the fifth grade at the Jewett School under the direction of Martha Perkins, music teacher. She has studied privately with Mary Downing, a clarinetist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, and Thomas Parchman, a clarinetist with the Portland Symphony.
