Cianbro wins Dragon Products contract

PITTSFIELD — Cianbro Corp. has been awarded a contract to build an innovative pollution-control facility at the Dragon Products Co. Inc. cement plant in Thomaston, according to Cianbro President Alton E. Cianchette.

The Dragon “recovery scrubber” project will be the first full-scale use of this patented technology owned by the Passamaquoddy Tribe on an operating facility.

The $10 million project, financed jointly by Dragon, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the U.S. Department of Energy, may be the first application of a technology that achieves a high level of scrubbing at an attractive overall cost.

Expected pollution control results of the recovery scrubber include:

Reduction of 90 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions.

Reclamation of waste dust by converting it to usable kiln feed stock.

Generation of a salable fertilizer constituent, such as potassium sulfate.

Generation of distilled water as a byproduct.

Cianbro expects to begin construction early this spring and complete it in the fall. The construction project will employ about 75 workers.
