LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of Maine baseball team won two out of three games against the host Southwestern Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns here this weekend, sweeping a doubleheader Saturday and losing on Sunday.

The Black Bears posted 7-4 and 10-8 wins Saturday, with the hosts winning 8-5 Sunday. Maine split four-game the series with Southwestern Louisiana, which was ranked 21st in the country in the latest Baseball America magazine.

On Sunday, consecutive singles by Ken Meyers, Tommy Bates, Greg Blevins and Butch Harris resulted in a decisivie three-run fourth inning for SW Louisiana.

For 27-9 Southwestern Louisiana, Blevins had a double, 2 singles and 3 RBIs to lead the way. Joe Waldron (4-2) notched the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

For the 11-12 Black Bears, Mark Sweeney singled twice and Craig Ender had a double and 3 RBIs. Jim Dillon (2-1) took the loss.

In Saturday’s first game, Maine’s Gary Taylor belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning and the Cajuns were held scoreless in the last three innings to key the win for the Bears.

UM’s Gary Taylor belted a solo homer in the fifth inning. Andy Hartung hit a three-run shot in the first inning and also had 2 singles. Mike D’Andrea (3-2) threw 7 1/3 innings to get the win. Rob Higgins got the save.

For the Cajuns, Blevins hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Perry Berry added 2 singles and 2 RBIs. Ken Meyers had a double, a single and 2 RBIs. Matt Howard (4-1) was the loser.

In Saturday’s late game, Shanan Knox and Mark Sweeney each hit two-run singles in the second inning to lead a five-run uprising and key the win for the Bears.

For Maine, Hartung had a single, double and an RBI. Larry Thomas (2-0) pitched 8 2/3 innings for the win. Chuck Nadeau notched his second save of the season.

For Southwest Louisiana, Damian Grossie hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Joe Burnett singled twice and had 2 RBIs. Cyrus Crosby (2-1) took the loss.
