LIMINGTON — A small plane crashed Sunday near the Harmon Airport in Limington, leaving one person with minor injuries, authorities said.
Pilot Jack Daniels of West Newfield carefully landed the plane in the woods after the engine had stalled twice, said Deputy Linwood Turnbull Jr. of the York County Sheriff’s Department.
Daniels suffered bruises and abrasions while passenger Glen Dyer of Waterboro, the owner of the plane, needed no medical attention. Both men are in their early 40s, Turnbull said.
“They had just finished installing a new engine in the airplane this week, and this was the maiden run,” Turnbull said. As they returned to the airport, “the engine stalled. They got it started once and it stalled again.”
Realizing he could not reach the airstrip, Daniels aimed the plane between some trees, as he had been trained to do, Turnbull said.
When a plane’s engine shuts off, pilots are taught to “use the airplane like a glider and hit something soft like tree tops,” Turnbull said. “It will break the force of the impact” when the plane hits the ground.
Daniels and Dyer have more than 30 years flying experience between them, Turnbull said.
They frequently fly from the Harmon Airport, where the plane is kept.
The Federal Aviation Administration was en route to the scene.
