PORTLAND — President Bush’s daughter wants to go before a mediator next month to see whether she and her estranged husband can agree on the terms of a divorce without waging a court fight.

Dorothy Bush LeBlond, of Cape Elizabeth, who filed for divorce from William LeBlond on Jan. 3, filed papers in Superior Court here asking to go before the mediator on April 17. A mediation session had not yet been set by Monday, court officials said, although William LeBlond’s attorney also is prepared to appear in the closed-doors session on April 17.

“It’s a way to get a neutral party involved,” attorney Thomas H. Allen of Portland said Monday. “There are financial issues and issues related to children.”

Asked whether he thinks the LeBlonds can reach agreement with a mediator, Allen said, “I don’t make predictions, and I don’t have any comment on the matter itself.”

Mrs. LeBlond’s lawyer, Phyllis G. Givertz, of Portland, was out of her office Monday, a secretary said.

Mrs. LeBlond’s divorce petition said “there are irreconcilable marital differences between the parties and the marriage has broken down,” without mentioning any specifics.

The couple has two children: Samuel, 5, and Nancy, 3.
