Pat Sumner, whose March 19 letter concerned WABI’s Maine hockey broadcasts, is right on target. I’ve been a season ticket holder for years and always listened to the away games on 97.1 FM with no difficulty. Although I live less than 30 miles from WABI’s transmitter, the reception is terrible.
The University of Maine takes pride in mentioning how far fans travel to watch a game at Alfond Arena and my guess is that a large number live more than 30 miles away. How many of you “hockey commuters” receive clear broadcasts of Maine’s away games? Two of my colleagues have mentioned losing WABI’s signal by the time they reach Newport, on I-95, and one of them reports changing frequencies and listening to the games on the UM campus radio station as far south as Augusta.
I, too, urge the University of Maine to reconsider its choice of stations for next season’s broadcasts. Those of you who buy advertising on WABI for hockey games might also want to reconsider. It would appear your ads may be reaching fewer people than you had expected. Rod Farris Searsport
