The Brewer City Council sent a proposal for business licenses back to the city clerk for further study Tuesday night. Some of the increases were as much as $86 and charitable institutions, under the proposal, would lose their exemption from paying license fees.
Council Larry Doughty opposed the large increases, some of which were three times the present rates, and one businessman told the council that several state and local licenses cost him about $1500 each year.
Clerk Archie Verow said Wednesday that he would talk to the city health officer about the frequency of inspections at restaurants. The officer usually conducted monthly inspections, the council was told, although state inspectors visit restaurants twice a year.
Verow later said he had revised the license fee schedule on the basis of actual costs involved with the inspections and that he, too, had been surprised at the figures derivbed from the revision.
Victualer licenses for restaurants with seating capacity of 50 or fewer would increase from $25 to $83; with capacity from 50 to 90, from $35 to $100; and with capacity of more than 100, from $50 to $136.
Caterers now paying $15, would pay $58; lunch wagons paying $15 would pay $47.
Amusement licenses would have increased from $30 to $93, under the proposal.
