A solid waste management conference sponsored by the Garden Club Federation of Maine will be held all day Wednesday, April 4, at the Bangor Civic Center. The conference is open to the public.
“We wish to reach as many people as possible and this is not limited to garden club members,” said Janet L. Meryweather, president of the Garden Club Federation of Maine. Meryweather urges the public to attend.
“This is a topic very much on our minds these days and the public will only act when they become more knowledgeable about the subject.”
Beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the morning, the conference will feature various speakers including Sherry F. Huber, director of the Maine Waste Management Agency; W. Tom Sawyer Jr., president of The Sawyer Companies; Randall Parenteau of the Maine Energy Recovery Co.; and Eda Van de Bogart, the conservation and environmental chairman for the Garden Club Federation of Maine.
In the afternoon, conference participants will tour a number of facilities including the Sawyer Environmental Recovery Facility, Penobscot Energy Recovery Co., Sawyer Environmental Recycling Co., and the city of Bangor composting facility.
Exhibits will be presented by the Junior League of Bangor, League of Women Voters of Maine, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Resource Conservation Services, Shop ‘n Save, and The Sawyer Companies.
There is no registration fee and participants are asked to bring their own lunch if they plan to attend for the entire day.
Further details on the conference may be obtained by calling Meryweather at 288-3709.
