NEWPORT — When two officers responded to Gilman’s Trailer Park on Route 100 Saturday evening, they thought they were investigating a suicide.

As they walked up to George Albee’s trailer, however, they were surprised when a young man appeared in the trailer doorway with a handgun, and later a shotgun, threatening to shoot the officers.

Harry Kidder, 19, eventually was taken into custody after a brief struggle with his brother, George Albee, over the shotgun.

According to Newport Officer Scott Webber, Albee had returned home to his trailer after Kidder had called him at work in Bangor, threatening to kill himself.

Webber and Maine State Trooper David Bowler were the first on the scene, taking cover when Kidder came out and told the officers to “back off and clear out” or he would shoot them.

When Albee arrived from Bangor, said Webber, his brother let him into the trailer and the two talked briefly.

According to police, the two men struggled over the gun, then Kidder then left the trailer and stood in the yard challenging the officers to “come and get me.”

Kidder was arrested and charge with terrorizing with a firearm. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he was being held under $5,000 double surety or $500 cash bail.
