CALAIS — Ames Department Stores Inc. of Rocky Hill, Conn., announced Thursday that it would not expand the Calais store.

In January, William Roberts, public relations director for Ames in Rocky Hill, said that the corporation tentatively had planned to renovate and expand the Calais operation, but he said he did not expect those plans to be formalized until March or April.

Christina Divigard, public relations coordinator at the corporate headquarters in Connecticut, said Thursday that although the Calais store had been slated for expansion and remodeling later this year, those plans had been scrapped.

“There will be no remodeling and no expansion this year due to the lease agreement we have,” she said. Divigard said that she could not elaborate.

The store, located next to Gay’s Shop ‘n Save on North Street, now occupies 39,116 square feet of space.
