Newport youth thrown 30 feet when hit by car

NEWPORT — A 17-year-old Newport youth was struck by a car Sunday while standing in the middle of Route 7 and suffered a broken leg.

According to Newport Police Officer Glenn Raymond, Roger Brown was standing in the travel lane on the south side of the highway talking to his grandmother, who was parked in a car on the opposite side of the road.

Brown was in stable condition with broken leg at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield.

At about 8:35 p.m., a car driven by Robert Getchell, 65, of Newport struck Brown. Raymond said Brown was thrown about 30 feet to the breakdown area of the road.

Getchell and his passenger, Jenny Roberts, were not injured, Raymond said. There was no damage to the vehicle.

Raymond was assisted by State Police Trooper Duane Jewell.
