ADDISON _ Douglas Guy has announced his intention to seek the office of county commissioner for Washington County’s District 3. Guy will run as a Democrat in the June 2 primary for the seat being vacated by Donald Grant of Addison.

Guy, 40, has been employed since 1987 as director of the Housing Services Department of the Washington-Hancock Community Agency. He is secretary-treasurer of the Maine Community Action Housing Council and is active on a state committee that reviews procedural changes in the Maine Weatherization Program.

Guy is secretary of the Addison Point Water District board of trustees. He is a volunteer ambulance attendant and driver for the Petit Manan Ambulance Corps. Guy and his wife, Christine, and son, James, live on Front Street in a 100-year-old house. The family is licensed to care for foster children.

Guy is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, where he served as a pollution investigator just after the enactment of the federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972. His military service also included a tour of 18 months aboard an ocean-going buoy tender based in Kodiak, Alaska.

After returning to civilian life, Guy was employed by the South Portland Housing Authority to start and manage the operation of the local Section 8 Rental-Housing Authority’s subsidy program.

Guy later spent eight years as executive director of the Exeter, N.H., Housing Authority, successfully developing and managing more than $5 million worth of housing. Guy has a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Ursinus College, Collegeville, Pa.

Guy said he believed that the years of experience working with the federal, state and local governments would enable him to help Washington County respond to residents’ needs by encouraging local control and initiative.

He said, “I worry that Washington County might be considered the dumping ground for the problems created by the development pressure in the rest of Maine and the Northeast.”

Guy’s opponent in the Democratic primary will be Norman Nelson of Roque Bluffs.
