Flower arranger is guest speaker at garden club

OWLS HEAD — Georgia Frizzell, proprietor of Lily, Lupine and Fern, Flower Arrangements, Camden, was guest speaker at a meeting of the Owls Head Garden Club on March 28. Frizzell demonstrated the making of three fresh flower arrangements. The speaker gave helpful hints while doing the arrangements.

Because of the killing frost conditions in Florida this year, most of the flowers used were from Holland and South America. They included daisies, myrtle, heather, yellow lilies, golden asters and a different kind of Queen Ann’s lace.

Winnie Barbour, club president, presided at the business session. Plans were made for the annual spring luncheon. Alice West, a member of the Luncheon Committee, reported the event would be held at noon Wednesday, April 25, at the Navigator Restaurant, Rockland. Also assisting on the committee are Elsie Degnan and Lucille Venskus. After the luncheon, Barbara Robidoux will speak on “Cooking With Herbs.”

Mary Ehmann, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, reported on the sale of seedlings and food to be held May 19 in Rockland. Sign-up sheets for workers and lists of sale items were given to all members. A request also was made for advertising posters.

Betty Bliss brought name tag holders to be used at future meetings. These will be kept after each meeting by the club president.

A report was made on the annual banquet plans by Alice McCartney. From the four names of restaurants presented, the Samoset was chosen for the May 30 event.

A discussion was held on landscaping plans for the new community building by the club. It was decided to wait until a definite plan has been worked out by town officials.

Martha Cobb reported on the Maine Street ’90 meeting she had attended as a member on March 26. The Maine Street ’90 group has requested a float from the club for the July 28 parade, when the new building is dedicated.

Winnie Barbour distributed photo copies of the program attended by five club members Saturday at the Farnsworth Museum. The workshop was titled “Elements of an Artful Garden” by Kate Nadeau, Stone Soup Farm, Monroe.

Club member Mary Quinn, now of Rockland, introduced her guest, Harriet Dearden.

Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting by Priscilla Colby, Elizabeth Gilbert, Alberta Jagels and Norma Meserve.
