STANDISH – The University of Southern Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from St. Joseph’s College 5-0 and 9-3 at Ward Field Wednesday.
In the first game, Bob Aceto pitched the complete game, 2-hit shutout, walking 2 and striking out 5 for the Huskies. His record is now 3-2. Don Lary led the Huskies’ 10-hit offensive attack with a single, double, RBI and 2 stolen bases. Jack Fowler, Scott Dutton and Jim Broughton added 2 hits apiece for Southern Maine.
Juan Bustamante and Gary Williamson each had a hit for the Monks.
Strong pitching continued for the Huskies in the second game as starter Greg Coppeta went 5 innings, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 7. He is now 6-0 and the Huskies go to 15-5. Lary singled twice, doubled and had a RBI, Bob Prince had 3 singles and an RBI and Dutton, Fowler and Mike Ramshaw added 2 hits apiece for Southern Maine, ranked first among New England Division III teams.
For the Monks, now 9-13, Gary Williamson and Randy Browder had RBI singles and Chris Cyr broke up Coppeta’s no-hit bid with a single in the fifth.
