WINSLOW – Pitcher Jeff Willett of Winslow had a day to remember Thursday as the schoolboy baseball season opened. Willett struck out 20 batters in his complete game victory and, with the score tied at 3-3 with nobody out in the bottom of ninth and the bases loaded, he hit a grand slam home run to lift the Raiders to a 7-3 victory over Mount View of Thorndike.

Matt Roy added 3 hits for the Raiders in the mutual opener.

For the Thorndike-based visitors, Wally Furrow had 2 singles and Tony Dunbar had an RBI single.

At Belfast, Dan Hammond had 3 hits for the Eagles, including a grand slam in the sixth inning, leading Messalonskee to the season-opening victory.

Jeremy Alexander added a 2 run homer in the third, a solo homer in the 7th and a triple for Messalonskee and Bill Dolley had 3 singles.

At Rockland, Rich Mazurek hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh,

after pitcher Jeff Woodman singled, to lead the Tigers to victory in their season opener.

Woodman pitched the complete game, allowing only 2 hits, 6 walks and struck out 10 batters.

For Medomak, 0-1, Russell Oglive and Tony Lee singled.

At Lincoln, starting pitcher Steve Coombs led the Lee Pandas to victory in their season opener over Mattanawcook Academy. Coombs struck out 11 batters in his two stints.

Mike Jipson had 2 singles for Lee and Earl Smith and Aaron Knowles each doubled.

For 0-1 Mattanawcook, Aaron Weed doubled and Joe Folster and Jeff Bradeen each had a single.
