PRESQUE ISLE — Dr. Zhu-qi Lu, assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, has received his doctorate of mathematics diploma from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Lu’s dissertation title was “Gevery Regularity and Growth of Solutions of Convolution Equations.”
Lu worked as a teaching assistant from 1983-1985 in the mathematics department at the State University of New York while working on his doctoral degree. He began his teaching career at the UMPI in the fall of 1988, after completing his course work and thesis. He defended his dissertation in November 1989, and received official doctoral status in February.
As well as achieving his doctor of philosophy in mathematics, Lu obtained his master of arts degree in mathematics at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1985, and his bachelor of arts degree in mathematics at Beijing Polytechnic University in 1982.
Before entering the master’s and doctoral program in New York, he taught at the high school and university level in China.
Lu said he was part of the first exchange group from China to enter universities after the cultural revolution had closed them in his country for 10 years. He plans to stay in the United States. He resides in Presque Isle with his wife, Huiducq, and 6-year-old son, Yuran.
